A Brief History of Afternoon Tea

Established by Anna, the Duchess of Bedford in the 19th century when she found herself becoming hungry around 4 o’clock in the afternoon. With most evening meals scheduled to be served at eight o’clock, she complained about ‘having that sinking feeling’ around late afternoon.

The Duchess wanted a little something to satisfy her hunger so she would request a tray of tea, bread, butter and cake to be brought to her room most afternoons.

The humble afternoon tea has long since evolved however it remains to be the epitome of luxury, elegance and etiquette.

Celebrate Afternoon Tea Week

With this in mind it’s little wonder that our quintessentially British tradition of the afternoon tea is still up there as one of the most popular gift experiences.

We have selected a few of the very best themed Afternoon Teas that London currently has to offer, from a Magical Peter Pan theme to a Weird & Wonderful Scientific display!

For the Chocolate Lovers amongst us this looks 'scrumdidlyumptious' and for something a little more Sophisticated there is this afternoon tea with the backdrop of the world famous River Thames.

Afternoon Tea isn't just for grown ups, as proved with this fun looking afternoon tea that takes place on a London bus taking in the sights and sounds of London...Fun for the Youngsters!

Just Relax...there's a day for that!

If there’s one thing that we as a nation could indulge ourselves in a little more often, it is relaxing. To encourage us to slow down and unwind we can mark 15th August as the day to help us focus on ourselves taking a moment to relax.

Here is a round up of some truly wonderful spa experiences to help relax, recharge and revitalise.

Fizz and Sparkle!

As if we needed an excuse to enjoy a glass of Prosecco, there is a whole day dedicated to celebrating this ever-popular bubbly beverage. National Prosecco Day, observed on August 13th this year, was specifically chosen to take place during the summertime with the intention of it being fitting to drink sparkles in summer!

Prosecco has long been synonymous with socialising with friends and catching up with loved ones, raising a glass and celebrating the here and now.

A glass or even a bottle of sparkly fizz is the perfect enhancement to many gift experiences. Add it to a dining voucher, an afternoon tea voucher or even an overnight stay as an extra special something.
